English
1 answer:
FinnZ [79.3K]3 years ago
5 0
The author expresses irony in his satirical proposal that to deal with the food shortages and starvation in his homeland that human infants and children be consumed. Clearly, he means to expose the ridiculous ways in which his homeland was attempting to solve its problems by exploiting the very people who were suffering as a result of the conflicts. In this way, he mocks the current attempts to fix the situation his homeland was facing with an outrageous use of irony.

“Only a handful of doctors had encountered it firsthand.”
quester [9]

The option that presents the best meaning for "firsthand" in the context of the paragraph is "with their own eyes," as is further explained below. (option B)

<h3>Meaning of "firsthand"</h3>

"Firsthand" is an adjective used to refer to something we have experienced directly, ourselves, as opposed to something someone else told us about. In the paragraph, the word is used to talk about doctors encountering yellow fever cases.

Taking the context into consideration, the best option is letter B, "with their own eyes." No labs or blood samples are mentioned in the paragraph, and talking to other doctors would not be a "firsthand" experience, which eliminates the other options.

In conclusion, option B is the correct answer. "Firsthand", in this context, means "with their own eyes."

Identify which stage of the listening process is occurring in the following scenario.
evablogger [386]

Answer:

Responding

Explanation:

There are primarily 5 Stages of the Listening Process. These are: <em>Receiving, Understanding, Evaluating, Responding and Remembering. </em>

The scenario above is in the "Responding Stage" of the listening process. This shows the listener's involvement in the conversation. Thus, he responds to what the speaker is saying by <em>nodding, asking some questions or just remaining silent</em> as long as he is showing some interest in the speaker's topic.

Since Cosette gave a feedback to Alexei by <em><u>asking a question</u></em>. She is showing Alexei her interest in the topic, thus the scenario is in the Responding Stage.

So, this explains the answer.
