The Republican Party is strong in the south, and especially the south east, where it is known as the Bible belt, strictly because of religious indoctrination . That is why Republicans run on fighting abortion and claiming that Democrats support tearing the heads off of babies and such nonsense. Northern states pretty much vote according to how the economy is growing and in particular in their state.
