Which sentences in this excerpt from Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens reflect the author's satirical tone? "Goodness gracious! Is

that you, Mr. Bumble, sir?" said Mrs. Mann, thrusting her head out of the window in well-affected ecstasies of joy. "(Susan, take Oliver and them two brats upstairs, and wash 'em directly.)—My heart alive! Mr. Bumble, how glad I am to see you, sure-ly!" Now, Mr. Bumble was a fat man, and a choleric; so, instead of responding to this open-hearted salutation in a kindred spirit, he gave the little wicket a tremendous shake, and then bestowed upon it a kick which could have emanated from no leg but a beadle's. "Lor, only think," said Mrs. Mann, running out,—for the three boys had been removed by this time,—"only think of that! That I should have forgotten that the gate was bolted on the inside, on account of them dear children! Walk in sir; walk in, pray, Mr. Bumble, do, sir." Although this invitation was accompanied with a curtsey that might have softened the heart of a church-warden, it by no means mollified the beadle. "Do you think this respectful or proper conduct, Mrs. Mann," inquired Mr. Bumble, grasping his cane, "to keep the parish officers a waiting at your garden-gate, when they come here upon porochial business with the porochial orphans? Are you aweer, Mrs. Mann, that you are, as I may say, a porochial delegate, and a stipendiary?"

The sentence in the excerpt from Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens that reflect the authors’ satirical tone is, ‘Are you aweer, Mrs. Mann, that you are, as I may say, a porochial delegate, and a stipendiary?’. Mr. bumble is a church warden however he also receives a specific amount of cash which was, at that time, is unlikely for a church warden.

Which statement best summarizes the central theme of this excerpt from Leo Tolstoy’s The Death of Ivan Ilyich?
Mrrafil [7]

Answer:

1. Acceptance of death causes less pain.

Explanation:

The Death of Ivan IIyich, composed by Leo Tolstoy and distributed in 1886, recounts to the tale of a judge from the Court of Justice, Ivan, who needs to confront initial an existence with no substance or profundity in it, which he grasps regardless of whether it harms him and he is despondent, a troubled marriage with a family that scarcely thinks about him, a mishap that at first appears to be innocuous however later on turns into the purpose behind his passing, his contact with blamelessness through his worker kid, Gerasim, which compels him to understand the contrast between a fake and a true life, lastly, his contact with death and its certainty. At last, Ivan understands that demise can't be kept away from and that grasping it and tolerating it tends to be substantially less difficult than battling it.

Write a short summary of the parable "The Prodigal Son."Use reflexive and intensive pronouns. Underlinethe reflexive pronouns an
DedPeter [7]

Answer:

There was a rich man who had two sons. His oldest son was quite the hard-worker. He would help around the house and farm, taking care of several things himself. This son was also humble and generous, never asking for things for himself. The youngest son, however, was completely different than his brother. He was lazy, never really doing things himself. He would much rather go to the town nearby, have fun and a couple of drinks with his friends, and only come home to sleep.

One day, the youngest son asked his father to give him his inheritance. His father obliged, and the son left with his money. Not long afterward, he had spent every single dime. Too embarrassed to return home, too poor to do nothing about it, he ended up begging others for help. He finally found a job at a farm, taking care of pigs. Since he was not well paid or taken care of, he would end up eating some of the pig food. He couldn’t help but pity himself. He remembered his father’s employees were well groomed and fed, so he decided to go back home and ask to work for his father.

The father saw the youngest son walking toward him from a distance. He ran to meet him halfway, hugged him and welcomed him home. He asked his employees to prepare a banquet to celebrate his son’s return. But the oldest son was jealous. He told his father, “I myself have been working incessantly for you. Yet, I have never asked for anything for myself. How come this son who has spent your money recklessly is welcomed like this?” But his father explain that he loved them both equally, and that everything that was his also belonged to his oldest son.

Explanation:

Above you will find three reflexive and three intensive pronouns. Besides underlining and italicizing them, I have highlighted them to make them easier to find.

Reflexive pronouns and intensive pronouns are quite similar. They are pronouns that end in -self or -selves. However, as the name suggests, reflexive pronouns indicate that the subject and the object of the action expressed by the verb are the same person or thing. For instance: I cut myself. --> I performed and received the action of cutting. On the other hand, intensive pronouns are only used to emphasize the importance of something or someone. They are not essential for the meaning of the sentence. For example: I myself made the cake. --> It was me, not someone else.
