Robert M. La Follete,Wisconsin Governor, proposed the system of direct primary in the process of voting.This technique gave voters the possibility to select the candidates that they wanted to be included in the general elections.

Although this was not an idea of his own he adopted it because he wanted to root out corruption. He believed that big corporations exert control over politicians in exchange for money and any type of favors.

The first primary took place in 1906 in Wisconsin and was then included in the elections for the U.S president in 1912.
