A reasonable person always analyzes the needs of community and decides his career or field of study accordingly. In this way he would be able to give something to community.

Every community has endless needs like electricity needs, housing needs, technology needs, medical needs etc. These community needs have different level of saturation. Machine learning, for instance,is a saturated field now. There has been done a lot of work in this field. But artificial intelligence is the hot research area and it is the need of the community. Industrial community wants that machines should work using artificial intelligence. In this way it has a very good scope. Therefore, most of the people will establish their career in artificial intelligence rather than in machine learning. In this way, community needs influences career and study choices.
