Descartes has a reasoning and rationality which is very similar to the scientific approach. Scholarship used to be based on faith, meaning that facts should not be questioned, especially past arguments. Descartes however started analyzing past works and using reason to improve and absorb the knowledge, checking the fact's veracity. His attempts consisted of trial and error and he found out that a lot of "facts" he was thought were wrong. This process and mindset are the foundation of the scientific method.
