In the play, two brothers, namely, Eteocles and Polynices, fight with each other for the throne of Thebes. While fighting they both die. This fight began after Eteocles denied giving up his throne even after when his father,  Oedipus, told him to.

After their death, the new king Creon gives order to bury the corpse of Eteocles with honor and leave the body of Polynices on the battleground to disgrace him.

Antigone is the daughter of Oedipus and she decides to bury the body of her brother Polynices in an honorable manner.
