for example

Entregué la carta a María. (i gave María the letter.)

direct object "<em>la carta"</em>

indirect object "<em>a María"</em>

To change 'la carta' for a pronoun we use 'la' (because it's femenine and singular)

"La entregué a María."

To change 'a María' we use 'le' (3rd person, singular)

"Le entregué la carta"
