In Philip K. Dic’s story “The Gun,” space explorers land on a planet that was once inhabited by humans. What does the following

excerpt tell us about the people who lived on the planet?
“Only watch out. They fired on us once without even knowing who we were or what we came for. Do you suppose that they fought with each other? Perhaps they couldn't imagine anyone being friendly, under any circumstances. What a strange evolutionary trait, inter-species warfare. Fighting within the race!”

The people valued history and preserved important relics for future generations to learn from.

The people were unfriendly and suspected anything that entered their territory to be an enemy.

The people valued friendship and exchanged their scientific know-how with other species.

Their entire population was wiped out by infighting and the inability to trust other people.

The correct answer is B. The people were unfriendly and suspected anything that entered their territory to be an enemy.

Explanation:

The short story "The Gun" by the American writer Philip Kindred narrates the way in which a group of space explorers discovers a deserted planet and while trying to explore it, they are shot by a gun which is programmed to shot be the anything and anyone that arrives to the planet. During the story the explores also find out the planet used to be the home of an ancient civilization, but they are unable to know why the civilization disappeared. In the excerpt presented one of the characters is wondering about this explanation, and tells the others the inhabitants of this planet could have fought against each other considering they had a gun that shot everyone that approach to the planet which show they were unable to trust other and were not friendly  as they even attacked other human beings. Thus, this excerpt shows the people that lived on the planet "were unfriendly and suspected anything that entered their territory to be an enemy" as they created a weapon to attack anybody who entered without proving they were enemies or not.

The right answer is:

They contribute to the rising action by introducing a secondary conflict related to Mrs. Pontellier’s envy of the ease with which Madame Ratignolle manages traditional female roles.

Explanation:

these two scenes from chapter 5 contribute to the novel’s plot development as the rising action. They can not be part of the climax because we are not talking about the main characters in the book.
