What was the significance of the rise in popularity of rock music?

It linked the younger generation with the culture of their parents.

Different kind of rock music developed during 1960's. Political kind of rock was also known to rise opposing Vietnam war.  Although these types of music are too old, the younger ones who love rock tend to know and learn the old rock music. There is a link between the two that helps the younger generation understand rock music better.
