This applies to many events that have happened in real life. Getting a ticket for driving recklessly can tarnish your driving record, and one bad post on the internet can stop you from getting a job or into a college. It's not fair because actions don't usually define the person. They can be impulsive, under influence, or pressured. 
Some one who disagrees with the statement would say that a person deserves the consequences that came with their decisions. That people should always look at all possible consequences before making a decision and if they didn't, they should suffer for it.
