In Arkansas, crowd of white citizens and troops from the Arkansas National Guard stopped a group of black students from entering the school.

However, President Eisenhower federalized and placed the Arkansas National Guard under Army command so that the guard would follow its commanders and prevent violence.

The Arkansas National Guard was no longer placed in the hands of the state governor.
