15 and 10 because

five years ago he would be 10 and the brother would be 5 and 10 is double 5

M=Mavis
B=Brother Age
M=B+5

Five years ago...
M-5
B-5
Since Mavis is twice her brother age you have to multiple by 2
(M-5) = 2(B-5)

Substitute M=B+5
(B+5-5) =2B-10

B=2B-10

-B=10
10+5=15

Mavis is 15
Brother is 10

Inequalities are used to show the relationship between unequal expressions

  • <em>The set notation of (5) and (6) are: </em>\{x : -6 > x \ge -2\}<em> and </em>\{x:-4 < x \ge 6\}<em>.</em>
  • <em>See attachmen</em>t for the graphs

The following should be notated when plotting the graph of an inequality

  • < and > are represented with open circles, while \leq and \geq are represented with closed circles
  • The arrows of and \le point to the left, while the arrows of > and \geq point to the right.

So, we have:

(a)\ -8 < x

Rewrite as:

x > -8

The graph of x > -8 will point to the right, and it will use an open circle

(b)\ -6 > x \ge -2

Split the inequality:

-6 > x and x \ge -2

<em>It is not possible for -6 to be less than x and at the same time, x is greater than or equal to -2.</em>

<em />

Hence. -6 > x \ge -2 cannot be represented on a graph

(c)\ -4

Split the inequality:

-4 < x and x \ge 6

-4 < x means that -4 is less than x or x is greater than -4.

So, we have:

x > -4 and x \ge 6

If x > -4 and x \ge 6, then we make use of x > -4 because it contains more values of x.

The graph of x > -4 will point to the right, and it will use an open circle

The correct answers are:

  • The ordered pair (7, 19) is a solution to the first equation because it makes the first equation true.
  • The ordered pair (7, 19) is not a solution to the system because it makes at least one of the equations false.

Further explanation:

Given equations are:

2x-y = -5

x+3y = 22

We have to check whether the given statements are true or not. In order to find that we have to put the points in the equations

Putting the point in 2x-y = -5

2x - y = -5\\2(7) -19 = -5\\14-19 = -5\\-5 = -5

Putting the point in x+3y=22

7 + 3 (19) = 22\\7 + 57 = 22\\64 \neq 22

The point satisfies the first equation but doesn't satisfy the second. So,

1. The ordered pair (7, 19) is a solution to the first equation because it makes the first equation true.

This statement is true as the point satisfies the first equation

2. The ordered pair (7, 19) is a solution to the second equation because it makes the second equation true.

This Statement is false.

3. The ordered pair (7, 19) is not a solution to the system because it makes at least one of the equations false.

This statement is true.

4. The ordered pair (7, 19) is a solution to the system because it makes both equations true.

This statement is false as the ordered pair doesn't satisfy both equations.

Two angles are supplementary. Which of the following equations can be used to find the value of the missing angle, x, if the oth
Natali [406]

Two angles are said to be supplementary if their sum is 180 degrees. So, if x and y are supplementary angles, the formula is

x + y = 180

We know that one of the angles (say x) is 98. So, the equation updates to

98 + y = 180

If we want to solve for the other angle, we can simply subtract 98 from both sides to get

y = 180-98 = 82

What expression is equivalent to -3+2/3y-4-1/3y
Neko [114]

Answer:

The simplified form of the given expression is -7 + (\frac{1}{3})y

Step-by-step explanation:

Here, the given expression is:

-3 + (\frac{2}{3}) y - 4 - (\frac{1}{3})y

Now to simplify the given expression, perform operations on LIKE TERMS:

We get:

-3 + (\frac{2}{3}) y - 4 - (\frac{1}{3})y  =( -3  - 4)  + [(\frac{2}{3}) y- (\frac{1}{3})y]\\= - 7  + [(\frac{2}{3}) -(\frac{1}{3})]y  = -7 + [\frac{2-1}{3}]y\\ = -7 + (\frac{1}{3})y\\ \implies -3 + (\frac{2}{3}) y - 4 - (\frac{1}{3})y =   -7 + (\frac{1}{3})y

Hence the simplified form of the given expression is -7 + (\frac{1}{3})y
