Explanation:

  All great ancient civilizations were near rivers because they had more capacity to produce food and interact with others by traveling by the river. By observing the river they would learn the lapses between the floods and know when to plant and harvest. And with a more fertile soil they should produce food faster than in other parts of the soil.

  Many cultures used the flood as a calendar because they almost came at the same time every year and thought it was a message from the gods to stopped with the farming.
