Charles V was ruler of both the Holy Roman Empire from 1519 and the Spanish Empire (as Charles I of Spain) from 1516, as well as of the lands of the former Duchy of Burgundy from 1506. He stepped down from these and other positions by a series of abdications between 1554 and 1556. Through inheritance, he brought together under his rule extensive territories in western, central, and southern Europe, and the Spanish viceroyalties in the Americas and Asia. As a result, his domains spanned nearly 4 million square kilometres (1.5 million square miles), and were the first to be described as "the empire on which the sun never sets".

Answer:

King Charles V of Spain gained control of the Holy Roman Empire in 1519.

Explanation:

King Charles V of Spain was a descendant of the Habsburg house. From 1506 to 1555 he was the lord of all the Dutch regions (since 1543), from 1516 to 1556 as Charles I king of Spain and from 1519 to 1556 as Charles V, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire.

The countries over which he ruled together formed the largest European empire since that of Charlemagne. In fact, his entire empire, including the American and Asian territories, was even larger than the former Roman Empire and can rightly be called one of the first empires of the New Age. Moreover, with the actual power of his home countries, Charles V was the last Holy Roman emperor who had the opportunity to assert his universal authority. At the European level, he successfully fought off the attacks of the Ottoman Empire. The virtually permanent struggle with France remained on undecided balance.
