Mazzini- Ideology and framework of Mazzini established Nationalist Liberalism

-Inspired Garibaldi and Young Italy thus establishing the idea of nationalism

-RR established framework and ideology of universal suffrage and republic

BUT Garibaldi was more nationalist and end product of Italy was growth of Piedmont and not rallying for Italy

Cavour- Through strengthened Piedmont he helped establish Italy as gave possibility of growth

-Economically through industrialization (Railway x3 and Piedmont trade x3) = enabled Garibaldi

-Militarily established through Crimea + Austro-Franco War, commuting 18,000 troops

only 40% of what was guaranteed at Plombieres

-Politically framework of Piedmont acted as statuto for the rest of Italy (Political system and constitution)

However didn't address (or intend) for south to be included

-> VE also stopped continuation of Austro Franco War - aided unification

Garibaldi- Military practically unified Italy by annexing for VE2

-Physically conquered Sicily and Naples in the name of nationalist unification (1860) --> Piedmont may not have grown so quickly

BUT failed to bring all of Italy together

-didn't conquer the Papal States x2 ('62,'67)

-French embaress GB and VE puts him under control by stopping Army in '60
