Britain strengthened its control over the American colonies after the French and Indian War because Britain gained significant territory from France.

Further Explanation:

The French and Indian War refers to the war between France and Great Britain in North America between 1754-1763. This war started over France and Great Britain claiming the same territory in North America. This war resulted in  a British victory and France losing much of their colonial possessions in North America. If you look at the map provided, you can see how much land Great Britain actually gained due to the victory in this war.

This war was not all positive for the British, as the cost of war resulted in significant debt for the British government.  The British government then began taxing the American colonists in order to pay off this debt. The British government felt this was justified because the British army was protecting the American colonists from the French during the French and Indian War.

Along with this, the British government also forbid colonists from moving west of the Appalachian mountains with the Proclamation of 1763. This move further enraged colonists, as it limited their access to land and natural resources. This would be the beginning of the end for Great Britain's relationship with the American colonists.
