The first continental congress was trying to have a peace treaty with the British Crown. They thought that they'd be able to resolve their problems with words. However, when this proved unsuccessful, they called for the second continental congress, that's where they declared war on the British and where they declared independence. There was also a significant difference in length of how long each congress lasted, the second being the longest between the two because of how carefully planned out everything had to be
