The Tallmadge Amendment was an proposed amendment to the Missouri bill that attempt to restrict residents from bringing slaves in Missouri.
This amendment never was passed but was highly fought for. In the end the Missouri Compromise was passed that DID ban slavery within the borders of the Louisiana Purchase.
The crew themselves only gave the mission a fifty-fifty chance of fully succeeding. Upon returning to Earth, Borman received a telegram from a stranger commenting on the mission's outcome by simply stating: “Thank you Apollo 8. You saved 1968.”
