Was the Korean War an example of American containment during the Cold War? Explain your answer in 2-3 complete sentences.
storchak [24]

Answer:

The temporary division of Korea along the 38th parallel was a success for the policy of containment, as communism did not spread into South Korea. In 1954, SEATO (South East Asian Treaty Organisation) was set up as a copy of NATO. Communism had been prevented in South Korea and the UN was seen as a success. The Korean War was an important development in the Cold War because it was the first time that the two superpowers , the United States and the Soviet Union, had fought a 'proxy war ' in a third country. The proxy war or 'limited war ' strategy would be a feature of other Cold War conflicts, for example the Vietnam War. Cold War” refers to the tension existing between the United States of America and the Soviet Union on the aftermath of World War II, continuing up to the last decade of the 20th Century. The Korean War refers to the 1950 war between North and South Korea.

Explanation:

The Korean War was a proxy war for the Cold War. The West—the United Kingdom and the U.S., supported by the United Nations—supported South Korea, while communist China and the Soviet Union supported North Korea. The Korean War ended three years later, with millions of casualties. Although the war ended where it began, the United States and its allies did succeed in preventing communism from overtaking South Korea. The Korean War made a clear example of what warfare began to look like with new terms of the post WWII era. It demonstrated that wars are now difficult to be in small scale due to new alliances and war terms.
