American Romanticism basically dealt with living in nature and appreciating it's beauty. To be able to live out in the wilderness, you had to be able to survive on your own more or less. Anyone who could do this was considered a "hero" in the sense of the story. It encouraged those to move west. There were other factors driving this expansion
