Stefano calculated the mean absolute deviation for the data set 32, 4, 12, 40, 20, and 24. His work is shown below. Step 1: Find

the mean. mc006-1.jpg Step 2: Find each absolute deviation. 10, 18, 10, 18, 2, 2 Step 3: Find the mean absolute deviation. mc006-2.jpg What is Stefano’s error? Stefano should have divided by 5 when finding the mean. Stefano found the absolute deviation of 20 incorrectly. Stefano should have divided by 6 when finding the mean absolute deviation. Stefano did not find the correct value for the mean.

Here is the correct work. The picture is not showing up, but you can compare this work to what is given.

To find the mean, you will find the sum of all the numbers and divide by how many numbers there are.

Mean: 4 + 12 + 20  + 24 + 32 + 40 = 132
          132/6 = 22
Mean: 22

To find the mean absolute deviation, you find how far away each of the numbers are from the mean.  Find the sum of these and divide by the same number of numbers.

(22 - 4) + (22-12) + (22-20) +(24 - 22) + (32-22) + (40-22)
18 + 10 + 2 + 2 + 10 + 18 = 60
60/6 = 10

The MAD is 10.

I think the correct answer is that Stefano should have divided by 6 when finding the mean absolute deviation.

Evaluate using the finite geometric sum formula
Sever21 [200]

Answer:

S_9=-18.703.

Step-by-step explanation:

The given series is,

\sum_{i=1}^9(-\frac{1}{2})^{i-1}

When we substitute i=1, we get the first term, which is a_1=-28(-\frac{1}{2})^{1-1}

This implies that,

a_1=-28(-\frac{1}{2})^{0}

a_1=-28(1)=-28.

The common ratio is

r=-\frac{1}{2}

The finite geometric sum is given by the formula,

S_n=\frac{a_1(r^n-1)}{r-1} , -1\:.

Since there are 9 terms, we find the sum of the first nine terms by putting n=9 in to the formula to get,

S_9=\frac{-28((-\frac{1}{2})^9-1)}{-\frac{1}{2}-1}.

S_9=\frac{-28((-\frac{1}{2})^9-1)}{-\frac{1}{2}-1}.

S_9=\frac{-28((-\frac{1}{512})-1)}{-\frac{3}{2}}.

S_9=\frac{-28(-\frac{513}{512})}{-\frac{3}{2}}.

S_9=-28(\frac{171}{256}).

S_9=-\frac{1197}{64}.

S_9=-18.703.

A 14.5-gallon gasoline tank is 3434 full. How many gallons will it take to fill the tank? Write your answer as a mixed number.
max2010maxim [7]
This is a multiplication of fractions.  If the tank is 3/4 full, and the tank holds 14.5 gal, then we need to multiply 14.5 * 3/4 First, convert 14.5 to 14 1/2 = 29/2 as an improper fraction Now, we have 29/2 * 3/4 = 87/8 = 10 7/8 gal That's how much gas is in the tank now. However, we want to know how much is needed to fill the tank. That can be determined by subtracting 10 7/8 from the amount that the tank can hold when full, which is 14.5 or 14 1/2. 14 1/2 - 10 7/8 can be re-written using improper fractions 29/2 - 87/8       We need a common denominator, which is 8 116/8 - 87/8 = 29/8 = 3 5/8 gal That's how much is needed to fill the tank
