Stalin instituted the Berlin Blockade<span> (24 June 1948 – 12 May 1949), one of the first major crises of the Cold War, preventing food, materials and supplies from arriving in </span>West Berlin. <span>The United States, Britain, France, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and several other countries began the massive "Berlin airlift", supplying West Berlin with food and other provisions.</span>
Britain and France were hesitant to support the confederacy until they could collaborate in supporting the Confederacy. France was particularly hesitant until the British could join in. This did not happen and the two countries remained neutral throughout the American Civil War
