The British had help from some Indian tribes who feared the colonists and their desire to expand westward. They also had the Loyalist groups in the colonies. 

The Americans had the French AFTER Saratoga. Prior they had no help. France wanted to make sure that were going to win. They didn't want to lose to Britain again. America had to prove that they could win.
