The Classical knowledge about philosophy, maths, and science, was originally written mostly in Greek, which was the prevalent language of scholarship in the Mediterranean region. However, many of those writings were translated into Syriac, Arabic, and Persian throughout the Middle Ages and eventually most of the first Greek versions were lost.

The medieval Islamic world slowly grew to be the main intellectual center because the Arab caliphates had absorbed that knowledge.  The Latin translations of Arab scholarship started what would be identified as the Renaissance period.
