Charlemagne succeeded unified much of Western and Central Europe and was the first Emperor recognized to rule from Western Europe after the fall of the Western Roman Empire about three centuries earlier. The extended Frankish state that Charlemagne founded was the Carolingian Empire. He was canonized by Antipope Paschal III - an act later disqualified - and he is now considered by some to have been beatified (a step on the road to sainthood) in the Church. Catholic.

Charlemagne was the eldest son of Pepin the Short and Bertrade de Laon. He was born before their classic marriage. He became king of the Franks in 768 upon the death of his father and was initially co-ruler with his brother Carloman I until the latter's death in 771.
