Constantine significance is that he became the western emperor in 312 and the sole Roman emperor in 324. Constantine was the first emperor to adhere to Christianity. Justinian significance is he served as emperor of the Byzantine Empire from 527 to 565. Justinian is best remembered for his work as a legislator and codifier. Theodora significance is she was a 6th century Byzantine empress married to Emperor Justinian the first she is remembered for being one of the most powerful woman in Byzantine history. She used her power and influence to promote religious and social policies that were important to her. Saint Basil significance is he was known for his care of the poor and underprivileged. Saint John Chrysostom significance is that he was known for his preaching and public speaking, his denunciation of abuse of authority by both ecclesiastical and political leaders, the Divine Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom, and his ascetic sensibilities. Emperor Leo III significance is he was a Byzantine emperor who founded the Isaurian, or Syrian, dynasty, successfully resisted Arab invasions, and engendered a century of conflict within the empire by banning the use of religious images. The Theodora wife of emperor Theophilos significance is that she was canonized in recompense for her zeal on behalf of the restoration of icons as objects of veneration. Saint Cyril significance is he is chiefly known for his campaign against Nestorius, bishop of Constantinople, whose views on Christ's nature were to be declared heretical. Saint Methodius significance is that his disciples were driven out by the Franks and took refuge in Bulgaria, where subsequently they were instrumental in the establishment of Christianity. Saint Cyril and Saint Methodius, as the 'teachers of the Slavs', played an important symbolic role in the Ukrainian national awakening of the 19th century.
