The objective of this policy was to remove Native American tribes to territories West of the Mississippi River, so their ancestral lands could be occupied by White settlers. Arguments supporting the Act included that they were still savages that could not be assimilated into the White system. In order to avoid the raids against White settlers, "Indians" had to be relocated. This controversial meassure led to the Trail of Tears and contributed to the genocide of indigenous peoples in America.
