Mercantilism, the country needs a favorable balance of trade so it exports more than it imports goods. The mother country would import manufactured goods to the colony exporting raw materials in exchange. For example the Columbian exchange exported new foods and crops from the Americas such as maize, tobacco, sugar, cotton and potatoes. Horses were brought from Europe and introduced to the Native American people. For example: the Lakota mostly hunted buffalo and this practice was improved with the introduction of horses.

The Boers were immigrants from Germany, France and the Netherlands who settled in the First European Colony established in South Africa ( at present day Cape Town) in 1653 by a Dutchman called Jan Van Riebeek.
The Boers created very large farms which served to bring much economic gain. At first, the Dutch were only interested in establishing a supply base for the Dutch East India Company in 1652. But over the next 150 years, The Dutch and other immigrants which formed the Boer community moved further inland and began engaging in agriculture and other economic activities, thus encouraging more Europeans to come and settle there.
The artist who drew the political cartoon of the Brooks-Sumner Affair, supported Sumner in his fight for anti-slavery. The incident between Brooks and Sumner happened during a two day-speech delivered by the latter against slavery. It was in 1856 that a senator from South Carolina named Preston Brooks attacked Massachussetts congressman known as Charles Sumner. The attacked was provoked by the anti-slavery speech delivered by the Congressman that angered Brooks. Brooks' cane in the incident has been broken while Sumner suffered serious illness due to the beating.
