In this passage from "The Black Cat", by Edgar Allan Poe, what the reader can infer about the narrator from the businesslike tone of this passage is B. That he is without morals and possibly insane. The tone is the attitude the writer takes toward the subject. In this case, the businesslike tone when the narrator refers to the murder and the concealing of the body makes the reader feel that he has no regret for what he has done and so he can be a man without morals and probably insane.

1 Complete the sentences with the words in the box.
Dmitry_Shevchenko [17]

After reading each of the sentences, we can complete them in the following manner by choosing from the possible choices:

 1. There is a new housing estate in the suburbs. You can get there by bus.
 2. Last month my family moved to a modern bungalow with a large garden.
 3. This chest of drawers is too small for my clothes. I need a big wardrobe.
 4. Singapore is an important trading centre in Asia. That's why the port there is so big.
 5. Many popular tourist destinations have scorching temperatures in summer.

There are a few useful tips to follow when answering this type of question:

 1. Read all sentences and all answer choices. That will give you an idea of what the sentences are about and what words may possibly go with each sentence.
 2. Begin by the most obvious ones. For example, number 5 above mentions "scorching" and "summer," which shows the only possibility is temperature.
 3. Go with what sounds more logic. "Housing" and "estate" make sense together, just like "trading" and "center".
 4. If it sounds right, it is probably right. But, when in doubt, research online to see if you can find similar sentences.
