A few years after the settlements happened, the colony of Jamestown started facing severe food shortages. This was due to the engagement of the majority colonists in activities other than growing food.

Less agriculture naturally led to less food production and resulted in starvation. Also, the spread of deadly diseases owing to the unhygienic conditions prevalent in the colony caused a number of deaths.
