The first break-in attempt by burglars working on Nixon's behalf occurred in May, 1972, as persons connected to the Nixon reelection campaign broke into the Democratic National Committee office in the Watergate complex of buildings in Washington, DC. An insider at the FBI who remained anonymous at the time, known only as "Deep Throat," began to give information concerning Watergate to reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein of the <em>Washington Post.</em> Persistent investigative reporting by Woodward and Bernstein brought the scandal to light and forced Congressional hearings. (Note: Years later it was revealed that Deep Throat was Mark Felt, who at the time was Associate Director of the FBI.)
