Alfred Wegener developed the idea of continental drift that was corroborated by the later theory of plate tectonics. It was important that he had solid evidence for his theory because of the critics who disagreed. So not only did he use the jig-saw fit of continents like South America and Africa but also their geology which matched between these two and having similar fossils.
