A suffix can change the meaning of a word, or as it happens with the word contemplate, can create a word family. The word contemplate is in itself a verb which expresses the action action of looking attentively at a thing, however, when the suffix is added the word turns into an adjective that means pensive or meditative. We can say, for instance, that the Greeks were contemplative of the world around us.
