<span>Leopold claimed that his primary motive in establishing a colony was to abolish the slave trade and promote Christianity. 
But as it turned out, Leopold forced the people in that region to do hard labour for his plantations. Humanists rected by demanding changes to the government and eventually leopold's operation was taken over by the Government.</span>

Douglas applied popular sovereignty to Kansas in the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which passed Congress in 1854. The Act had two unexpected results. By dropping the Missouri Compromise of 1820 (which said slavery would never be allowed in Kansas), it was a major boost for the expansion of slavery.
