Ferdinand Magellan (1480-1521) was a Portuguese explorer that was hired by the Spanish crown to explore new territories. He considered that the world was round and tried to find a route to the Spice Islands navigating west the Atlantic Ocean, then to South America to cross the Pacific Ocean to find a route that did not cross into territories that belonged to the Portuguese crown.
