Commonly known as the Crisis of the Third Century, the Imperial Crisis was the period during which the Roman Empire splintered into three separate political entities. These entities included the Roman, Gallic, and the Palmyrene empires. These periods were tagged and characterized by combined pressures of civil war, plagues, chaos and social turmoil. The effects resulted in a shift in paradigm of leadership and military participation in politics.

The imperial crisis was a period of great pressure exerted by foreign peoples towards the empire, causing a strong impact on the economy, politics and social within the empire. This crisis lasted 50 years. He also received in the name of Crisis of the third century, Military Anarchy and Anarchy of the third century. There were consequences for production, transportation, food, caused the ruin of the currency. The financial crisis, the continuous wars and the excessive expenses, the difficult collection of taxes led the Emperor Diocletian to divide the empire in two: East and West to handle them more easily, but over time they distanced themselves and the East became prosperous, while that the west descended, which the barbarians took advantage of to invade them. Rome was sacked by the Visigothic king Alaric, then suffered attacks from the Vandals and finally the German leader Odoacer deposed the emperor Romulus Augustus, from then on no Roman emperor would return to rule, reaching the fall of the Roman Empire first in the West and then in East.
