The storm howled, and Nicki could barely hear the captain's voice as she stood out on the bow of the ship. She remembered a time

when standing here would have terrified her. "Boats are no place for children," her father had said. But now she was not a child. Her father, on the other hand, never seemed to change. He slept below the deck, steady and stubborn as always. Nicki looked out at the vast expanse of sea, dreaming of the places she was going to go, unaware of the man in the top hat, who continued to stalk her.
Which statement best identifies the characters in the passage?

A. Nicki is a round character; Nicki's father is a flat character.

B. Nicki is a flat character; Nicki's father is the protagonist.

C. The man in the top hat is a flat character; the captain is a round character.

D. The captain is a flat character; Nicki's father is a round character.

Answer:

A. Nicki is a round character; Nicki's father is a flat character.

Explanation:

The terms <em>flat character </em>and <em>round character</em> were coined by Edward Morgan Forster and first mentioned in his book <em>Aspects of the Novel</em> (1927). These two types refer to the kind of development characters go through from the beginning to the end of a literary work.

Flat characters do not change throughout the story. They are relatively uncomplicated, especially compared with round characters, who go through sometimes drastic change. In the given excerpt, we have a contrast between Nicki, who has grown and changed, and her father, who stayed the same as before.

According to "All Summer in a Day" by Ray Bradbury ,How do the children react to seeing the sun?Cite specific evidence from the
adoni [48]

Answer:

The children went out in the sunshine, playing and 'savoring' the warmth of the sunshine.

Explanation:

Ray Bradbury's <em>All Summer In A Day</em> tells the story of how  group of children in Venus were in anticipation for the sun. But along with this eagerly awaited event, they also exercised a bullying act of locking Margot in the closet, thus keeping her away from the sun and the experience of enjoying it.

When the sun did finally come out, <em>"they were running and turning their  faces up to the sky and feeling the sun on  their cheeks like a warm iron; they were  taking off their jackets and letting the sun  burn their arms".</em> They played and enjoyed under the sunshine, <em>"until the tears ran down  their faces; they put their hands up to that  yellowness and that amazing blueness and  they breathed of the fresh, fresh air,..... looking at  everything and savored everything"</em> .The narrator even commented that they were <em>"like animals escaped from their  caves"</em>, playing until raindrops began falling again, driving away the sunshine.

Svetllana [295]

Answer:

More chairs are needed to make seating available for all attendees.

Explanation:

To make an implicit meaning is to say about something but not mentioned or expressed directly. It may be stated in some way but not directly mentioned.

In the given excerpt from <em>Infinite Jest </em>by David Foster Wallace, the narrator talks about the interview room that he was seated in. The only implicit detail he furnished was that the room needs more chairs for others to be seated. This is seen in the passage <em>"the others sit, stand and stand"</em>, while the other options are clearly stated.

Hal seated in a chair with his ankle on his knee (<em>"ankle on knee, hands together in the lap of my slacks"</em>), the Director of Composition involved in the interview process (<em>"interview room’s other personnel include: the University’s Director of Composition"</em>) and the tennis coach with money in his pocket (<em>"jingles pocket-change"</em>) are all stated explicitly.

Thus, the correct answer is the first option.
