[1]nothing that comes from the desert expresses its extremes better than the unhappy growth of the tree yuccas. tormented, thin

forests of it stalk drearily in the high mesas, particularly in that triangular slip that fans out eastward from the meeting of the sierras and coastwise hills. the yucca bristles with bayonet-pointed leaves, dull green, growing shaggy with age like an old [5] man's tangled gray beard, tipped with panicles of foul, greenish blooms. after its death, which is slow, the ghostly hollow network of its woody skeleton, with hardly power to rot, makes even the moonlight fearful. but it isn't always this way. before the yucca has come to flower, while yet its bloom is a luxurious, creamy, cone shaped bud of the size of a small cabbage, full of sugary sap, the indians twist it deftly out of its fence of daggers and roast the prize for their [10] own delectation. Why does the author use the word "prize" to describe the bloom of the yucca tree (line 9)? a. To communicate how rare it is to find the bloom b. To emphasize the deliciousness of the bloom c. To highlight the color and shape of the bloom d. To show how to prepare the bloom for eating

Answer:

a. To communicate how rare it is to find the bloom.

Explanation:

In the given passage, the author talks about how the yucca tree may be useless and <em>"its woody skeleton, with hardly power to rot, makes even the moonlight fearful."</em> But irrespective of how the tree may be, there is one good thing about the plant. It produces the best bloom which is <em>"luxurious, creamy, cone shaped bud of the size of a small cabbage, full of sugary sap"</em>. This is what the Indians used to <em>"roast the prize for their own delectation"</em>, which shows that the bloom is something that they treasure, something precious and worth more than it seems to be. The author's use of the word<em> "prize"</em> shows that he bloom is rare and hard to find/ get, laying emphasis on the bloom despite the hardship it entails in extracting it from the <em>"fence of daggers"</em>.

Read the passage from the opinion of the court in
stiks02 [169]

Answer:

B) He uses a previous status of African Americans as evidence.

Explanation:

In a 7 to 2 ruling, the Court concluded that African Americans were not and could not become U.S. citizens. As a result, Scott's suit in federal court would be ineffective. Many people think that the ruling, which led to a debate that brought the country closer to civil war, was one of the worst decisions in Supreme Court history.

Studying in regular school is better than studying in selected school.Discuss.
damaskus [11]
Agree:
•Regular schools are less likely to be pressuring and academically focused which could be a positive thing as it may prevent stress and mental health issues that are caused by pressuring school environments
•More likely to have a greater sense of community and do so much more than just teaching e.g. extra curriculm, non academic lessons (e.g. may cover student support topics such as mental health and alcohol/drug abuse), this will make students more motivated to study as they feel as though they're part of a community
USA POINTS ONLY⇊
•Teachers in regular schools are more likely to be more qualified than teachers in selected schools (In many states, selected school teachers aren’t required to earn a four-year degree from an accredited college, they routinely have less experience and higher turnover, where as teachers in regular schools must have one bachelors degree in a specialized education field)
•Regular schools are less likely to have ethnic segregation in comparison to selective schools (A recent study by Dr Christina Holt from the University of Technology, Sydney found that ethnic segregation is apparent within selective entry high schools)

Disagree:
•Selective schools have a more academic and competition orientated environment which could be seen as a positive thing as it may encourage students to work harder and achieve better results.
•Students are more than likely at similar levels of ability which means that students can thrive as they could work towards the same goal

Describe three ways poets and other writers can use commas to mark slight pauses in sentences.
mamaluj [8]

Comma. The comma is the punctuation symbol that has the most uses.

It serves a variety of purposes, but its two primary ones are (a) to interrupt the flow of thought with unnecessary expressions and (b) to separate elements to make the relationships between them more clear.

The comma is the most understated punctuation mark. It doesn't make a big deal out of itself or the material it separates or sets off. Examples of comma usage would only elicit a chorus of "duhs," as it is so widely used.

It suffices to say that a comma is typically the safe option to set off information and separate elements, provided that it doesn't interfere with any functions that are specifically reserved for the colon, semicolon, or parentheses.
