The Flapper style was seen to be wildly inappropriate. Women cutting their hair and wearing short skirts fought against the role and expectations traditional society had for women. Women were empowered by the passage of the 19th Amendment (women's suffrage) and new found freedom established during World War I. Their image represented a blending of gender expression as women took on more masculine hair cuts and behaviors. The movement represented a freedom and acceptance toward independence from their families and the wife role expected of them.
