In contrast to the colonies of New England and the central region, predominantly the southern colonies: Virginia, Maryland, South Carolina, and the North and Georgia. Its soil and climate were more favorable to colonization focused on European interests. The product that the southern economy developed early on was tobacco. A plant that required permanent expansion because it is demanding, depleting the soil and forcing new cultivation areas. At the end of the 17th century, the economic and social structure of Virginia and Maryland was based on large plantations and small landowners. The owners of coastal plantations, sustained via slave labor, concentrated most of the political power and also the best lands.
