The South was traditionally an agricultural area so they had to work with northern factories and companies in their needs for manufactured goods. They believed that the industrial growth would help them since they would be able to buy their own manufacturing goods instead of getting it form the North since it only made the North stronger.

The Chinese culture did grow large and great without the help from any outside influence especially from the English who were literally taking over the world. Japan was getting semi influence from the Netherlands which they traded with. So yes the Chinese was protected by the natural geographic structure of the land.
