The move caused high deficits in Montgomery's public transport system, as a large percentage of people using public transport stopped using it. The effort extended from December 1, 1955 to December 20, 1956 and led to a US Supreme Court decision declaring legal bus segregation requirements in the state of Alabama and Montgomery unconstitutional.
