Through unions, they also inherited vital tools such as boycotts and strikes which gave them immense leverage while negotiating with industry leaders and employers for better wages, job protection, retirement benefits, and better work conditions.

The unions not only provided for the legitimization of the rights of the workers to strike but provided coordination and better management which resulted in these efforts becoming collective thus increasing their potential in terms of the leverage they generated during negotiations.
