Henry Bessemer (1813 - 1898) created the pneumatic conversion process in 1856. This invention was his most significant accomplishment. Back then there wasn’t an efficient process to produce steel. Bessemer´s converter was able to make 30 tons of high-grade steel in 30 minutes, allowing to reduce the cost of mass produced steel.

This in expensive  process helped to make steel from pig iron and mass produce it and the use of steel was important for such things as making new machinery like the steam engine and factory machines for the Industrial Revolution in Britain.
