Douglass tried to show that some slaveholders are cruel while others are not. The cruel ones usually could sleep with female slaves without any consequence. There children becomes that of there masters'. Some slave masters usually deny slaves of there rights and privilege.
Some slave Masters are not cruel. They treat there slaves well without dehumanising them.
So Douglass' purpose in paragraph 1 and 2 will be to show that not all slaveholders were cruel
