Throughout his reign, one of Mao Zedong's main purposes was to eliminate all other parties, or people that were political opponents to the Communist Party. This was done in order for the Communist Party to have absolute rule and control over the country. This was largely successful mission of Mao as he indeed managed to destroy the party-state system, while also making the potential opponents terrified to come out publicly and oppose him. This led to China becoming a one party system where the Communist Party had and still has total absolute power, with the elections being held being only a formality as the head of the party puts in position which ever person is suitable for the interests of the Communist Party.
