A cartographer is a person or professional who draws maps. They produce different types of maps. The study of maps and the practice of making maps is known as cartography.

Map projections are flat representations of our spherical Earth. It is a method that use makes use of the curves of the Earth and displaying it in 2D, like on paper and display screens.
