The Silk Road was an ancient network of trade routes, which connected East and Southeast Asia with Africa, West Asia and Europe. The Silk Road began during the Han dynasty, mainly to expand the trade of silk, which was only produced in China. However, it reached its splendour during the Tang dynasty.

The trade route contributed to the development of many civilizations in regions such as China, Korea, Japan, India, Iran, Europe, Arabia and the Horn of Africa. Goods such as silk, spices and weapons were traded, along with many religions, philosophies, sciences, technologies and even diseases.
