For these types of questions I like to use the "bowtie" method:

<u>     1 inch    </u> = <u>15</u><u> miles</u>
4.5 inches  =  x miles

To solve, multiply 15 miles by 4.5 inches, then divide this product by 1 inch.

x= 15 miles x 4.5 inches ÷ 1 inch
x= 67.5 miles

  • For the first position there are 15 options.
  • For the second position ther are 14 options (one runner already finished).
  • For the third position there are 13 options.

P = 15*14*13*12*11*10*9*8 = 259,459,200
